UPWARD
BOUND PROGRAM
The Upward Bound Program helps under-represented high school
students, whose parents did not graduate from
college, prepare for higher
education. During the school year, participants receive academic
assistance, college
prep, and career awareness activities. During the summer,
participants attend a six week residential component where
they receive
instruction in literature, composition, science, foreign languages,
and mathematics, as well as cultural
enrichment and personal development..
Nationally,
the Upward Bound Program was founded in 1963 and was
the nations first such program targeted
specifically at and for under-represented
students. The program has been in existence at Hazard
Community &
Technical College since 1990.
The
program's objectives are to provide students with access to educational
opportunities and to increase the
number of those students
who go on to college, while simultaneously developing the
skills needed to be
independent, contributing individuals. The program
is funded by the United States Department of Education and
is administered through Hazard Community & Technical College's
Pre-Enrollment Department.
